Haven and Hearth seems to be the only MMORPG appropriate for Java. It only runs at 800×600 and it’s a sprite-based isometric little number that Java seems to love. It’s humble, but it knows that. The graphics themselves remind me of the good old days of riding in the back of the family van with a six-pound Gameboy and what little audio it offers throws the same nostalgic curveball.
This weekend, our dearly beloved stole more content from Masters of Orion 2 and expanded on the ‘Ratoidz’ civilization in Vast Universe. But wait, there’s more! If you kidnap a commander now, it turns out that the Ratoidz will churn out a few ships and come back for him!
It’s a fairly complex process that draws a great deal of real-world science together with video-game-style minigames. Most of the gameplay is similar – you can technically make a hatchet on your anvil using no specialized tools, but spending the time to make a ball peen hammer will change the way you can shape metal.
While still in the open beta phase, the developers are changing things left and right. It’s hard to tell where the game will end up, because every day is changing the entire game. Last week, armor was severely overtweaked, leading to everybody losing their entire fleet as satellites mounted with a single torpedo could take down battleships. Oops!
As for a community, this MMORPG is made up of the dumbest people on Earth with a sprinkling of the smartest. Every few weeks, the game world turns it upside-down and makes the smart people look stupid and the dumb people look brilliant. In the Kingdom, the only thing that matters is that you log on and click on something that appeals to the inner part of your brain stem.

Okay, it’s back up. I’m going to try to actually do something this time. We’re now using Nixihost.com for our hosting needs, and have switched back to Wordpress. Sometime next week, I’ll get Vanilla installed and bridged with WP and keep adding content.
